Hankook batteries in Gulf heat

How Long Do Car Batteries Last in the UAE?
  • MF and PRIME batteries are sealed flooded designs and the AGM is valve-regulated. Both keep water loss low, which helps in a hot climate, but neither stops heat from corroding the positive plates. In Dubai a Hankook battery in a daily-driven car typically outlasts the same battery in one that sits for weeks between drives.

Who makes Hankook batteries

Most drivers know Hankook for tyres, but the group has a long-running battery business as well. It traded for years as AtlasBX, the company that, by its own account, launched the first maintenance-free car battery in Korea in 1982 and the first Korean AGM battery in 2005. In April 2021 AtlasBX merged into the holding company Hankook & Company.

Production is split between two plants in Korea, at Daejeon and Jeonju, and one in Clarksville, Tennessee, which was set up as the first for the company in North America and includes a dedicated AGM line. The batteries are sold under both the Hankook and AtlasBX names in more than 100 countries, and since 2022 a German subsidiary has supplied Europe directly.

The passenger-car range has a clear order. MF and SMF are sealed maintenance-free batteries for conventional cars. PRIME sits above them for cars without start-stop that carry heavier electrical loads. EFB handles entry-level start-stop, and AGM is for start-stop with regenerative braking and for premium cars. Sizes run across both the JIS and DIN standards.

What Hankook does well

  • Its own factories

Hankook batteries are not a licensed name on another product. Hankook & Company designs them and builds them in its own plants in Korea and the United States, so the brand and the manufacturer are the same.

  • Both size standards covered

The range runs from small JIS cases for city cars to large DIN cases for European saloons. A household with a Japanese SUV and a German saloon can usually stay with one brand for both.

  • AGM experience since 2005

The company dates its first AGM battery to 2005 and later developed AGM specifically for start-stop engines. Its Tennessee plant was built with a production line set aside for AGM alone.

  • A step between MF and EFB

PRIME fills a gap many ranges leave open. It serves a car that has no start-stop but does have powerful audio, extra lighting or long idling with the air conditioning running.

Worth knowing before you choose Hankook

  • The tyre reputation tells you nothing about the battery. Tyres and batteries come from separate businesses in the group, so judge the battery on type, size and production date.

  • The same range is also sold as AtlasBX, which can make online comparisons confusing. Compare the capacity and cold-cranking figures, not the label.

  • Large AGM sizes for big European SUVs are not always in local stock. We confirm before dispatch.

Battery types: flooded, EFB, AGM and 12V lithium

The type your car left the factory with decides what can replace it. Fitting a cheaper type than the car was built for is the most common reason a new battery fails early.

AGM vs EFB vs flooded, explained
TypeWhat it isCars that use itWhat can replace it
Flooded (maintenance-free)Sealed lead-acid battery with liquid electrolyte. The standard starter battery. Most cars without start-stop: the majority of Japanese and Korean saloons and SUVs, older European cars.Another flooded battery of the same size, or EFB as an upgrade.
EFB (enhanced flooded)Flooded design strengthened to take about twice as many charge cycles.Entry-level start-stop cars and cars with heavy electrical load.EFB or AGM. Not a standard flooded battery.
AGM (absorbent glass mat)Electrolyte held in glass-fibre mats. Spill-proof and built for constant charge and discharge.Start-stop with energy recovery and most premium cars: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo.AGM only. The car usually needs the new battery registered.
12V lithium and auxiliary unitsSmall low-voltage battery that powers locks, screens and computers on EVs, hybrids and some sports cars.Newer Tesla builds, BYD and other EVs, some Porsche and McLaren models. The same unit the maker specifies. We confirm by model and year before dispatch.

Cars we most often fit Hankook to

Hankook covers the JIS sizes Japanese cars use and the DIN sizes found on recent Korean and American models, with EFB and AGM for their start-stop versions.

Hankook battery questions

All questions and answers
Are Hankook batteries made by the tyre company?

They share a group, not a factory. Batteries are made by Hankook & Company, the holding company that absorbed the battery maker AtlasBX in April 2021. Tyres come from a separate company, Hankook Tire & Technology. The battery plants are in Daejeon and Jeonju in Korea and in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Is an AtlasBX battery the same as a Hankook battery?

They come from the same manufacturer. Hankook & Company sells batteries under both names, and which one reaches a market depends on the distributor. When two batteries share a size, type, capacity and cold-cranking rating, treat them as equivalents and choose the one with the more recent production date.

How long is a Hankook battery covered for?

Cover runs up to 24 months, and the term differs between MF, PRIME, EFB and AGM batteries and between sizes. You are told the exact period when you order, together with the battery line we are bringing. If the battery fails a test inside that period, contact us with the invoice.

Which Hankook battery suits a Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima or Honda Accord?

Japanese saloons like these mostly take mid-size JIS batteries in the D23 family, and a Hankook MF in that size is the usual match. Hybrid versions and some newer trims differ, and terminal side changes between models. Share the model year on WhatsApp and we confirm the exact code.

Should I pick Hankook MF, PRIME, EFB or AGM?

Start with what the car was built with. A car that has AGM stays on AGM, and a car with EFB takes EFB or AGM. Without start-stop the choice is between MF and PRIME, and PRIME is worth it mainly when the car carries extra electrical equipment. We confirm the factory type from your model details.
