What Gulf conditions change

  • Fitting a conventional battery in a start-stop car is a mistake. It is not built for constant restarts and a partial state of charge, so it fails within months. A Varta field test in Dubai saw conventional batteries in start-stop cars fail in 5 to 6 months. Registration matters just as much. Without it, the car keeps charging the new battery as if it were the old one, and its life shortens.

How it works, step by step

  1. Identify the battery

Send the make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. We confirm whether the car uses AGM or EFB and the right size before a technician leaves.

  2. Test on arrival

The technician tests the existing battery and the charging voltage. If the battery is healthy and only drained, we tell you and leave it in the car.

  3. Fit like for like

The new battery goes in with the settings protected where the car needs it. AGM replaces AGM. EFB is replaced by EFB or stepped up to AGM, never down to a conventional battery.

  4. Register and check

On cars that monitor the battery, the new one is registered or the monitoring is reset so charging matches it. We then check the charging voltage and a clean start.

What agm and start-stop battery replacement covers

  • A test first, so a start-stop battery is replaced only when it has failed

  • AGM or EFB matched to the original technology, size, capacity and terminal layout

  • Delivery and fitting at your home, office or parking, free with the battery

  • A memory saver where the car needs one to hold its settings during the swap

  • Battery registration or BMS reset on cars that require it, confirmed before dispatch

  • Old battery taken away for recycling, and a warranty of up to 24 months on the new one

When this is the service you need

  • Start-stop no longer switches the engine off at traffic lights

  • A battery or start-stop warning message on the dashboard

  • The engine hesitates or cranks slowly when it restarts after a short stop

  • The car limits or shuts down comfort functions to save power

Battery types: flooded, EFB, AGM and 12V lithium

The type your car left the factory with decides what can replace it. Fitting a cheaper type than the car was built for is the most common reason a new battery fails early.

AGM vs EFB vs flooded, explained
TypeWhat it isCars that use itWhat can replace it
Flooded (maintenance-free)Sealed lead-acid battery with liquid electrolyte. The standard starter battery. Most cars without start-stop: the majority of Japanese and Korean saloons and SUVs, older European cars.Another flooded battery of the same size, or EFB as an upgrade.
EFB (enhanced flooded)Flooded design strengthened to take about twice as many charge cycles.Entry-level start-stop cars and cars with heavy electrical load.EFB or AGM. Not a standard flooded battery.
AGM (absorbent glass mat)Electrolyte held in glass-fibre mats. Spill-proof and built for constant charge and discharge.Start-stop with energy recovery and most premium cars: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo.AGM only. The car usually needs the new battery registered.
12V lithium and auxiliary unitsSmall low-voltage battery that powers locks, screens and computers on EVs, hybrids and some sports cars.Newer Tesla builds, BYD and other EVs, some Porsche and McLaren models. The same unit the maker specifies. We confirm by model and year before dispatch.

AGM and Start-Stop Battery Replacement: questions

All questions and answers
What is the difference between an EFB battery and an AGM battery?

EFB is an enhanced flooded battery with liquid electrolyte, strengthened for entry-level start-stop systems. AGM holds the electrolyte in absorbent glass mat, tolerates deeper cycling and accepts charge faster, so it is used on start-stop cars with regenerative braking and on most premium models. The right choice is whatever the car was built with.

Can I fit a normal battery in a start-stop car?

No. A conventional battery is not designed for the repeated restarts and partial charge of a start-stop system, and it fails within months instead of lasting years. Start-stop may also stop working and warning messages can appear. For start-stop battery replacement we fit EFB or AGM only, matched to what the car came with.

My car came with an AGM battery. Can it be replaced with an EFB?

No. A car that came with AGM must get AGM. Its charging and energy management are set up for the way an AGM behaves, and the battery often sits in the boot or cabin, where a sealed design matters. Going the other way is fine: a car supplied with an EFB can be upgraded to AGM.

Which cars need battery registration after an AGM battery replacement?

BMW, Mini, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover and Volvo generally need the new battery registered or the battery monitoring reset, and so do many newer Ford and Mercedes-Benz models. The requirement varies by model and year. Send us your car details and we confirm what yours needs before dispatch.

Is battery registration included in the job?

It depends on the car, so we confirm it before dispatch. When you send the make, model and year, we tell you whether your car needs registration or a BMS reset and whether it is included in the job. You know the answer before the technician sets off, not after the battery is fitted.

How do I know my start-stop battery is failing?

The first sign is usually that start-stop quits: the engine no longer switches off at junctions because the car is protecting a weak battery. Slow restarts, a battery warning message and limited comfort features follow. Heavy air-conditioning load can also pause start-stop, so a test is the way to be sure.
