AGM vs EFB vs Flooded: Which Battery for Your Car in the Gulf?
Fit the battery type your car left the factory with. A car built with AGM takes AGM only. A car built with EFB can take EFB or AGM. A car without start-stop runs on a conventional flooded battery. In Varta's field test in Dubai, conventional batteries fitted to start-stop cars failed within 5 to 6 months.

Rapid clicking with dim lights usually means a weak battery. A single heavy click with bright lights points to the starter motor. A car that stalls after the jump leads come off, or shows a battery lamp and dimming lights while driving, has an alternator fault. A voltage reading and a load test confirm which one it is.

Battery registration tells the car's battery monitoring system that a new battery has been fitted, so charging starts again for a fresh battery. BMW, Mini, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo and many newer Ford and Mercedes-Benz models need it. If it is skipped, the car keeps charging for the old battery and the new one wears out sooner.

A car battery in the UAE typically lasts about two years, compared with 3 to 5 years in temperate climates. Workshop managers quoted in Gulf News say most batteries last only a couple of years in local conditions. Heat is the cause: it speeds up the chemistry inside the battery and raises self-discharge. Two years is typical, not guaranteed.

Connect red to the flat battery's positive terminal, red to the donor's positive, black to the donor's negative, and the last black clamp to bare engine metal away from the flat battery. Start the donor car, then the flat one, and remove the leads in reverse order. A Tesla cannot be used as the donor car.

A car battery label tells you four things: case size, capacity in amp-hours (Ah), starting power in cold cranking amps (CCA) and terminal position. Japanese and Korean cars mostly use JIS codes such as 55D23L. European cars use DIN sizes such as L3, also called H6. American cars use BCI group sizes. Match all four to the old battery.

A jump start is enough when a sound battery was drained by lights left on or by weeks of standing. Replace the battery when it fails a load test, goes flat again within days, or is past about two years old in UAE heat. If the car stalls once the jump leads come off, the alternator is the likely fault, not the battery.

There is no verified figure for a UAE summer. The AA says a fairly healthy battery in a modern car lasts at least two weeks parked, and AAA warns that cars with heavy electronics can drain in as little as a week. Heat raises self-discharge, so expect less in the Gulf and prepare for any absence longer than a week.
Read the guide · 4 min readThe 12V Battery in Teslas, EVs and Hybrids: Why It Still Fails
Every Tesla, EV and hybrid carries a small low-voltage battery alongside the main pack. It powers the locks, screens and computers and switches the high-voltage system on. When it goes flat the car will not open or start, even with a full traction battery, and it wears out in Gulf heat like any other car battery.

A small number of manufacturers stand behind the battery brands commonly sold in the UAE. Varta belongs to Clarios, ACDelco is the General Motors parts brand, Amaron comes from Amara Raja of India, Solite from Hyundai Sungwoo Solite of Korea, and Hankook absorbed AtlasBX in 2021. Duracell and Energizer on car batteries are licensed names.
