What to know about Ford batteries
Battery monitoring needs a reset
Fords from about 2011 onward have a sensor on the negative terminal that tracks battery age and charge. After a new battery goes in, the system should be reset. Otherwise it keeps charging as if the old battery were still fitted.
Clamp to the earth point
On a Ford with battery monitoring, the negative jump lead goes on the body earth point, not on the battery negative post. Connecting at the post bypasses the sensor, so the car never registers the charge that went in.
Does the Mustang need battery registration?
Fords with a battery monitoring sensor, which covers most models from about 2011, need the system reset when a new battery is fitted. Our technician does this at the car. Older Fords and basic models without the sensor need nothing.
