Discovery batteries under bonnet covers
Discovery 3, Discovery 4, LR3 and LR4 carry the battery at the back of the engine bay under a plastic cover. Start-stop versions of the Discovery 4 add a smaller auxiliary battery under the matching cover on the opposite side.
Connect to the earth point
Land Rover fits a battery monitoring module on the negative terminal. A charger or jump lead should go to the body earth point, not the negative post, so the module can count the charge going in. Our technicians connect it that way.
Does the Defender need battery registration?
The battery monitoring system is reset with a diagnostic tool after fitting, so it stops treating the battery as aged. Classic Defenders and the Discovery 2 have no such system. Before dispatch we confirm if that reset is included.

Does the Defender need battery registration?
On most model years, yes. The car tracks the age and type of its battery, so the new one has to be registered or it keeps charging as if the old battery were still fitted. We confirm before dispatch whether registration is included for your Defender.
How long does a Defender battery last in the UAE?
About two years is typical here, against three to five in cooler climates. Heat ages the battery whether the car is driven or not, and short trips with the AC on full never quite recharge it. A test before summer shows how much life is left.
